Councils are seeing the local impacts of discarded nitrous oxide canisters. New restrictions show the value of collective advocacy.
WSROC has welcomed NSW Government reforms restricting the sale and supply of nitrous oxide products, following advocacy by Western Sydney councils and NSW Health.
Discarded nitrous oxide canisters, commonly known as nangs, are increasingly being found in parks, reserves, car parks, roads and waste bins. This creates risks for communities, council workers and waste collection staff, while also creating significant disposal costs for councils.
WSROC worked with councils and NSW Health to highlight these impacts and support stronger action.
The reforms demonstrate the value of councils working collectively to identify emerging issues, build an evidence base and advocate for changes that improve community safety and local amenity.
