WSROC supports councils in protecting Western Sydney’s unique biodiversity hotspots. This is vital to creating a greener, more vibrant region that uplifts community wellbeing and enriches quality of life for all.

Western Sydney is home to diverse ecological communities from the Cumberland Plain to Blue Gum Forest, freshwater wetlands, health lands and dry rainforest. Rapid development, clearing and introduced weeds pose critical challenges to these areas, and result in fragmentation and loss of ecosystems. For example, only around 6-8% of the original Cumberland Plain vegetation remains in Sydney.

This fragmentation affects the health of the region, threatening native species and leads to a sense of disconnect from the land, especially among First Nations people. Without proper oversight and protection, Western Sydney’s unique habitats and the species within them are at risk of disappearing from the wild.
