Sydney Plan: an important step forward, but delivery will be critical

Housing in Western Sydney Housing in Western Sydney WSROC

The Sydney Plan is final. Now the focus shifts to delivery, and making sure growth creates liveable, connected communities.

WSROC has welcomed the release of the final Sydney Plan following public exhibition.

The final Plan responds to several issues raised by WSROC, including a clearer 20-year vision, stronger recognition of Western Sydney's role in jobs growth and greater emphasis on infrastructure sequencing.

However, the next phase will be critical.

Housing targets alone will not create great communities. Delivering the homes Sydney needs must be matched by investment in transport, open space, community infrastructure and essential services.

Councils remain concerned about the lack of clear delivery mechanisms, funding commitments and accountability arrangements needed to ensure growth is properly sequenced and supported. Issues including social infrastructure funding, circular infrastructure planning, extreme heat and climate resilience will also require continued attention.

The success of the Sydney Plan will ultimately depend on implementation. Councils are a critical delivery partner for the NSW Government, and the next phase needs to focus on clear responsibilities, appropriate funding and genuine ongoing engagement.

WSROC looks forward to working with the NSW Government and Greater Sydney councils to ensure the Plan delivers not just more housing, but liveable, connected and resilient communities.
