General

Australia has the third largest area of mangroves in the world. Mangroves are commonly found on the intertidal mud flats along the shores of estuaries, usually in the region between the saltmarshes and seagrass beds. Mangrove trees have adapted to cope with the stress of being periodically inundated with salt water by employing methods of salt secretion, exclusion and accumulation. There are five species of mangroves in NSW, with the Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina) and the River Mangrove (Aegiceras corniculatum) being the two most common. Mangrove forests are ecologically and commercially important. They provide food and shelter for estuarine fauna; provide habitats for commercially important crustaceans including blue swimmer crabs, king prawns and mud crabs; are important nursery grounds for juvenile fish; filter and trap pollutants and sediments from land run-off thus maintaining estuarine water quality; provide barriers and buffer zones to stabilise shorelines and prevent coastal erosion; they are also a major producer of organic material. Anthropogenic threats to mangroves include trampling, oil pollution, altered freshwater flow regimes and excess nutrient inputs.
