General

Intertidal areas occur where the oceans and estuaries meet the land, and are delimited by the mean high and low tides. Common intertidal habitats include estuaries, beaches, rocky shores, mangroves, and seagrass beds. Organisms that live in these regions must be able to deal with periodic inundation and exposure and changes in salinity. There is a high species diversity found in intertidal zones, which can be attributed to the varied intertidal micro-habitats and the differing degrees of exposure.
